How is Skyfall a product of its time?

- Outline how gender, terrorism, criminality and sexuality are represented differently in Skyfall compared to earlier entries in the Bond franchise. Gender: In the earlier bond films such as Thunderball, males were seen as slightly more inferior to women, in a sense that they could get away with sexualising and using the women. This was commonly shown through Bond being uninvited by the women but still managing to have his way and sleep with them. Where as in later films such as Skyfall, Bond is more respectful. Although he is still flirtatious and suggestive towards the women, bond only seduces the women when invited to, rather than always just getting his way. Terrorism: In the earlier bond films such as Thunderball, terrorism takes a whole team (organisation) working together to actually achieve anything. Where as in the later bond films like Skyfall, terrorism is mainly dominated by Cyberterrorism. This is shown through the character of Silva who managed to control ter...

Initial Production Ideas

Moving Image: - TV extract based around the action/crime genre : Story based around Heroes (MI5 style agents - British) and Villains (Stereotypical eastern europeans - Russian) Story following the plot of a drug bust that takes place at a Russian bar, the location being used as a front to disguise for what is taking place inside the building.    For this moving image production I will be working alongside my classmate Stefan Okopskyj. For this we intend to focus on the representations of both Heroes and Villains along with eastern europeans. By including the representations of Heroes and Villains this links with my research essay reinforcing and challenging the existing stereotypes. Roles for the production task: Emily - Camerawork & Lighting Stefan - Editing & Music Both - A split between director roles, script writing and Mise-en-scene

Essay

This essay will examine the representations, along with an exploration of existing heroes and villains in the action/crime genre, researching into what it takes for a character to receive their title. This essay will also show the perception of central heroes and villains, or a protagonist and an antagonist showing how they are binary opposites along with exploring their similarities and differences.  Heroes and villains have always existed, even before the invention of film and television. One example of this is shown through the use of heroes and villains in plays and novels written by William Shakespeare. In Shakespeare’s 'Othello', villainy is portrayed through the character of Iago who is the main antagonist of the play, Iago being one of Shakespeare’s most manipulative and sinister villains. Another of Shakespeare’s villains is the character Lady Macbeth from the play Macbeth, a character who stops at nothing to become queen. Along with these villains Shak...

Essay (Final Plan)

"I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way" - Jessica Rabbit (Who Framed Roger Rabbit - 1988) Introduction - This essay will examine the generic stereotypes, storylines and characteristics along with the exploration of existing heroes and villains in the action/crime genre, researching into what it takes for a character to receive their title. This essay will also show an insight into central heroes and villains, or a protagonist and an antagonist showing how they are binary opposites around who the entire narrative is based on. As this quote above shows, heroes and villains are represented through a persons perspective. 1)  Historical development of heroism and villainy Heroes and villains have always existed, even before the invention of film and television. Heroes and villains commonly took place in stories (e.g shakespeare) but also long before. Example  - (Iago - Othello / Lady Macbeth - Macbeth / Juliet Capulet - Romeo and Juliet) Quote  - "Tales o...

Narrative assessment

1) Give 3 examples of the use of action codes are used the film Skyfall and explain how these help to tell the story. (3 marks) - The relationship between M and James Bond - When M finds out that Bond had been shot (the thought of him being killed) connotations of M being upset are shown, as she turns to look out of the window in sadness - Silva's sexuality - When Bond is captured, Silva showing suggestive connotations of him being gay,  this being shown through Silva stroking Bond's leg, along with caressing his face and chin. - The relationship between James Bond and Moneypenny - Throughout the film suggestive romantic behaviour is shown through their encounters and work together. One aspect in which this is shown is through a scene towards the end of the film when Bond says "I feel safer now" as Moneypenny appears. Just after this scene Moneypenny reveals her name as throughout the film they had never been formally introduced. 2) Give 3 examples of the use of ...
